Nikor 50mm F1.4

I have to admit after shooting professionally for 10 years I just got my first Nikon brand lens. Most of the time I go with Sigma lenses because they are cheaper. I picked up a 50mm F1.4 Nikor lens on ebay for $65. At first I was psyched because that was a steal I though. When it came in I felt like a total idiot because it is a non cpu non AF lens. 100% manual all the way.

At first I thought crap did I misread the listing? Nope I'm just an idiot. Then I though ok this may be an expensive paperweight in the office. I tried to attach it to my D300 it went on without a hitch. Then I did a google search and found a youtube video about how to set up a non CPU lens for the D300. Took literally 5 seconds to set up. Then I did some shots around the office think hmmm this may not be that bad after all. Today I put the lens through it's paces. I have to admit it's a pretty sweet lens. Focusing is easy and sharp. Focusing is easy once you get use to the old school manual and not be depending on AF. This may be my new favorite lens in my arsenal. Can't wait to try some portraits with it.

I did some searching and put in the S/N and get this...... the lens is older then I am!  It was made between 1970 to 1973. I must be a total photo nerd because my initial thought was "cool your using a lens on a digital camera that was made in a time when digital photography was just someone's pipe dream"! Kinda cool in a totally nerdy kinda way. I got my 50mm F1.4 now next on the lens list is to get either a 35mm F1.4/1.8 or a 24mm F1.8. I want a short wide angle prime. This time it will be a AF prime and not Manual

I can honestly say this is the best money I have spent on ebay in a while. While it wasn’t exactly what I wanted it has exceeded my expectations.

As a lot of people know that aside from photography I am also a MS patient. For the last 6+ months my photography work has been sporadic at best. I have been having a lot of issues with something called Foot Drop. Basically what it is, is the signal from the brain to the toes to lift up your toes on one foot when you walk isn’t being sent correctly. It’s kinda like the toes didn’t get the brain’s company memo. For me this happens on my right foot. I end up tripping quite often and my balance and strength on that side has gone down a lot. I end up falling 3-5 times a week. For the last 6 months I have been having to use a cane to get around. Which I have not had to use in over 4 years. Trying to maneuver around with a cane, photo gear, and never knowing when I am going to fall hasn’t given me the warm fuzzies to go a lot of shoot. The whole risking equipment thing you know.

My doctor out at University of Colorado is wanting me on a new brace called the Bioness Ness L300. It is a brace that you wear around your lower knee that has 2 electrodes. It comes with a heel sensor and every time you go to take a step it sends a electric pulse into the nerves which cause them to fire and pick up the toes. So patients with drop foot have gotten so relief from it.

For the last week I have been doing a trial of the Ness L300 brace. All I can say is wow. It’s been like I have the old me back. I am able to walk unassisted. I am not tripping and I am not falling. Needless to say my doctors and everyone who has seen me in it have been amazed. One doc commented that this brace for me is “a game changer” it gives me back my life and my photography. So I have been shooting as much as I can with it on. Taking advantage of shooting like I use to whole I have this trial. I have to give the brace back on Monday.

My physical therapist, my neuro, PT Physician, and my orthotist ( guy who handles braces and is letting me try it) are all fighting together against the insurance company. Insurance company is being well insurance. The brace runs about $6,000. The brace has been FDA approved and on the market for over 5 years now. The insurance company sees this brace as “experimental” and refuses to cover it. So we will see what happens. With the brace I can work and be productive with my photography. Without it there goes my career and my photography professionally speaking. Trying to look into funding but a lot of the funding is for refurbished or used braces which are illegal to sell through a dealer. So I have no idea what the future holds now which is really scary.

The brace is amazing though if you have foot drop and need help due to MS, stroke, etc. The trick is getting it approved. Thats the hard part.
